After the Plague Came the Renaissance
This spray-painted piece references The Creation of Adam by Michaelangelo Buonarotti on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (painted 1508-1512). The original painting depicts the moment right before God touches Adam’s hand to imbue him with the spirit of life. In Corie Mattie’s version, the space between their hands is expanded and small birds are added between them, a symbol of hope she often uses in her work. The text “After the plague came the Renaissance” references both the Italian Renaissance (15th-16th centuries) that came after the Black Plague (14th century) and to the current situation and hopeful future.
