Mona Lisa with Face Mask
This spray-painted work references the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, painted c. 1503-1506. One of the most famous paintings in the world, it’s connection to Italy where this work is located is that both artist and sitter were from Florence. The text above Mona Lisa’s head, which translates to “Catania does not stop,” might reference Italy’s reopening of businesses in April 2020. Catania, the second largest city in Sicily and a major business and transportation center, would have been positively impacted by loosening of quarantine restrictions.
